One of the most important thing you can do for healthy skin.

Double trouble is UVA and UVB Rays.  Do you really know what it means?   And why sun protection matters every day of the year?  I thought it would be a good time if any to review this topic.

UVA Rays:  The “Aging” Rays

  • Penetrates deep into the skin layers, damaging collagen and cells.  Try 40 times deeper than UVB.
  • Increase the risk for skin cancer
  • Cause wrinkling and pigmentation
  • Up to 50 times more prevalent than UVB
  • Present year round with a constant intensity
  • Can pass through clouds and glass (people will tend to have more damage on the left side of their face versus right)

UVB Rays:  The “Burning” Rays

  • Affect the outermost layers of the skin
  • Cause skin reddening and sunburns
  • Key role in development of skin cancer as well as photoaging
  • Varies with time of day, season, and stronger in the summer
  • Most intense between the hours of 10:00am to 2:00pm

Now lets talk about SPF (sun protection factor).  SPF is ratig how long it will take to cause redness and burning on the skin versus nothing at all.  For example, a sunscreen with a SPF30 will protect you from sunburn or redness 30 times longer than you could without sun protection.  Important to note that SPF indicates only the level of protection from UVB Rays.  It is not an indicator of UVA protection.  That is why it is important you use sunscreen that is broad-spectrum to protect across the UVA and UVB spectrum.

One of the best and least expensive thing you can do for your skin is wear sunscreen.  SO WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN AND APPLY IT OFTEN!  I’m on the road a lot so I make sure and have sunscreen in my car to reapply throughout the day.  And oh, don’t forget to apply on your hands too.  It is one of the first areas to show signs of aging.  We’ll talk about that on another post.  Don’t miss it!  Sign up for the Newsletter and Like us on Facebook.

By the way, in my opinion, moisturizers and makeup that say they have SPF 15 is not be enough protection.

Anything that surprised you?

He praises women over 40!

You may have seen this before or maybe not.  A friend sent this over on email and I had a good giggle reading it.  Enjoy!

This is what Andy Rooney thinks about women over 40:

As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all.  Here are just a few reasons why:

A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, ‘What are you thinking?’  She doesn’t care what you think.

If a woman over 40 doesn’t want to watch the game, she doesn’t sit around whining about it.  She does something she wants to do, and it’s usually more interesting.

Women over 40 are dignified.  They seldom have a screaming match with you at the opera or in the middle of an expensive restaurant.  Of course, if you deserve it, they won’t hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved..They know what it’s like to be unappreciated..Women get psychic as they age.  You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest.  They’ll tell you right off if you are a jerk, if you are acting like one.  You don’t ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons.  Unfortunately, it’s not reciprocal.  For every stunning, smart well-coiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress.  Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, ‘Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?’  Here’s an update for you.  Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage.  Why?  Because women realize it’s not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage!
